The weekend was characterised by three relevant bits of global news, two major football finals and, obviously, Trump’s assassination attempt.
Let’s start from the most important one… Euro 2024 cup final.
Kidding. I’m obviously talking about Trump.
The thing is, this wasn’t just the most important thing that happened this weekend. It is one of the most important events of the year, the decade.
Before Trump, something like that had only happened to six other Presidents.
On four occasions – Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy – the President was killed.
On three occasions – Reagan, Roosevelt and now Trumps – the President survived.
I’d love to say this is a rare occurrence but the thing is, it probably no longer is.
Earlier this year, the Slovak Prime Minister was shot. And an even worse fate befell Shinzo Abe of Japan, who was killed in 2022.
And this is just off the top of my head, I’m sure this happened more than once over the last two years.
In my view, it’s bad enough that this happened at all, but the way the media covered and people talked about it is worse.
It’s incredible how these days everything is a conspiracy theory.
I’m not saying we should believe everything we see or hear but unless there’s evidence to the contrary, I think we should simply accept that we saw happened and sure, some details might be a bit sketchy, but some of the theories floating around are truly ridiculous.
But the worst part, by far, was the media coverage.
Several news outlets that some people still deem reputable – they aren’t, they’re as good as dead – clearly think we’re stupid.
Some talked about ‘loud noises’ instead of gunshots.
CNN, a doomed publication, said ‘Trump fell’.
Then there’s Argentina, who won the Copa America with a late winner courtesy of Lautaro Martinez.
Unfortunately I was asleep so I can’t really speak to that, as I haven’t watched the game, but I can talk, briefly, about the 2024 Euro cup final.
It seemed no one was really supporting England, aside from the Brits, and not even all of them.
But more importantly, there are two things I want to say.
First, I do feel bad about Kane. He’s not getting any younger, and it’s incredible to think he’s still trophyless.
This was the sixth final he lost.
Second, this tournament was quite boring.
The thing is, some of these players joined the tournament having already played 40 or 50 games in the season.
And you could tell.
It was pretty boring to watch. Only around 2 goals per game were scored, and there was no top goalscorer, because there were six of them, including Musiala, Olmo and Kane. There were also 10 own goals.
Too many own goals is always a sign. Because most own goals are a combination of several factors – bad positioning, clumsy touches and so on – but that is simply more likely if you’re tired.
Well, it’s Monday now. So I guess it’s time to get back to normal.
