Portable AI assistants aren’t taking off amid issues on top of issues – But there’s something we should bear in mind

A silver lining.

Portable AI assistants aren’t taking off.

Rabbit said it sold 100,000 units of its R1, but there are controversy surrounding the company and its founder(s).

And then there’s the other AI assistant everyone’s talking about, Humane AI Pin, which is facing all kinds of issues.

Reviews have been bad, both for R1 and the Human AI.

Different reviewers and different people had different things to say, but the bottom line was, “this isn’t particularly useful”, “it could’ve been an app”, “it just isn’t working”, and so on.

And now there’s more.

Human apparently only sold 10,000 AI Pins, nowhere near as many as they expected, and they’re now warning the charging case might catch fire.

Now that’s unideal.

Humane AI Pin isn’t cheap by the way.

The wearable, screenless smartphone, this is the definition the company used to market it, runs on CosmOS, an operating system developed by Humane themselves.

It costs $699, with an additional $24 monthly plan if you want to attach a phone number to it.

Humane said they “immediately disqualified this battery vendor”, which I’m sure they did, to “maintain our high quality standards”, which I’m sure they will.

But unfortunately, in such cases, it doesn’t matter whose fault it was, the buck always stops with the company that makes the main product, so that’ll be Humane.

But it’s not all bad though.

We should bear in mind this is a new type of product, and it takes time for technology to perfect itself.

In other words, these two products, Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin, don’t seem to work properly, but maybe in the future they will.

Or other products from other companies will.

Now, is that something we want? Well, that’s a different conversation altogether.
