Spotify and Apple are having a go at each other, and Spotify won this round

Over to you, Apple.

Spotify and Apple are having a go at each other, there’s a war going on, and Spotify certainly won this battle.

In short, Spotify argues that Apple’s position in the market, especially when it comes to certain features and products, amounts to a proper monopoly.

Further, Spotify argues that Apple abuses its position in the market, usually by exerting pressure with its my-way-or-the-highway policies and overcharging third-party companies.

As part of their latest spat, Spotify told the EU that Apple is impeding competition for music streamers through the App Store. They filed a complaint, five years ago, and now they’ve won.

In short, Spotify told the EU that Apple is silently overcharging users by not letting them know they can have the same thing, but cheaper, outside its App Store.

Spotify also argued that Apple’s 30% commission on transactions made via Apple’s in-app payment system is way too high.

Now the EU has fined Apple €1.8 billion – equivalent to around $2 billion – because Apple has “abused its dominant position in the market by restricting developers from informing consumers about alternative services [and] this is illegal under EU antitrust rule”.
