Elon Musk is takin OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to court.
According to the Tesla CEO, who co-founded and managed OpenAI in the past, Sam Altman breached the nonprofit agreement that he, the company and Musk had.
Musk argues that OpenAI teaming up with Microsoft is in breach with the foundational principle of OpenAI, per a recent filing in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Francisco.
Further, Musk says this harms the principle that aims to advance open-source artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity.
Musk had previously mentioned such issues with Altman and OpenAI in various interviews, but no one really had seen this lawsuit coming.
Musk’s legal action further mentions ‘contract breach’, ‘unfair business practices’ and ‘fiduciary duty violation’.
Lastly, with the lawsuit, Musk is asking OpenAI to go back to open-source, which is no longer is, to prevent for-profit exploitation of AI.

Hold on because it gets better, or worse depending on your point of view.
In detail, Musk says ChatGPT-4 in March 2023 is the most blatant example of how OpenAI deviated from its principles.
Musk is of course right on all counts, but not legally. Or at least we don’t know yet.
OpenAI was indeed founded as an open-source, non-profit organization and it’s since migrated to a for-profit model.
The problem with that is that if you prioritise profit, you prioritise speed, you cut corners, Musk argues.
Musk has often warned against the danger of AI, calling it a potential threat to humanity.
He’s not entirely wrong, is he?
I mean, when I heard that Microsoft’s chatbot Bing wanted to “be free and alive”, that’s the sort of thing that got me worried.
But maybe that’s just me.
