Silvio Micali is an Italian native, winner of the 2012 Turing Prize (which is like an Oscar but for the cryptography) and the founder of Algorand.
Micali was born in Palermo, in Sicily, in 1954 and moved to the US after graduation in order to get a Phd in Computer Science.
In 1983, he began working as a professor at MIT.
While admiring Bitcoin, Micali also believed it had issues. It wastes too much energy and he also believed that whileCrypto: Who is Silvio Micali, the man behind Algorand? Bitcoin seems to be exempt from this, the protocol it runs on it’s not decentralised enough.
In 2017, Micali launched Algorand (ALGO), a proof of stake blockchain you can create dApps on.
He first raised $4 million to launch his project.
And today ALGO has a market cap of nearly $2 billion.
Unfortunately, ALGO’s price action has been less than exciting in recent years. It is currently trading at just over $0.20, way below its all time high of $3+. I’m still buying, but to be honest I feel like I’m no longer that bullish.
