Tim Draper, an American investor, won the jackpot in 2014 when an insane bet he made paid off big time.
Draper was already pretty wealthy to begin with, but this one bet made him a fortune.
Back then, Bitcoin was still a toddler and most people had no idea it existed. And those who knew usually had no idea what to do with it.
The US Government was trying to get rid of a large stack of BTC it had seized from the well known Silk Road case.
The government decided to auction some of those Bitcoins, and Draper bought around 30,000 BTC for $19 million.
That’s $23 in today’s money, when adjusted for inflation.
Fast-forward to 2023, and 30,000 BTC are worth about $1.26 billion.
