OpenAI’s Sam Altman gets given the boot

What’s going on here?

The now-ex CEO of OpenAi Sam Altman has been ousted, ‘fired’ by his own company with a startling statement by the board.

Just yesterday, the OpenAI board announced that Sam Altman would be leaving the company that he was running. This is surprising, mostly because Altman was to OpenAI what Elon Musk is to Tesla, but the statement that came with it was even more surprising.

The board said Altman’s departure “follows a deliberative review process” after which the board concluded that “that he [Altman] was not consistently candid in his Communications”.

That’s harsh. Normally, even when there’s bad blood, these statements generally talk about “mutual agreement” and “wish him luck for his future endeavors” and so on.

On this occasion, however, they simply said, he’s not being honest with us, he’s gotta go.

We don’t know what happened behind the scenes, but some people are speculating that this may have something to do with the weird hybrid structure of the company.

OpenAI is run using this odd non-profit, for-profit hybrid structure, and not only that, the company started out as an open source company, but now the code is pretty much closed.

Maybe we’ll find out more in the future. In the meantime, I’ll continue to be the only human being that’s *not* using ChatGPT.
